For once, the story is not only about who United failed to sign. It is about whether Michael Carrick now has the tools to build a title challenging midfield, and what that actually looks like in practice.

A triangle of Guimaraes, Tielemans and Mount, supported by Santos and others, would give Carrick a blend of control, bite and creativity that stands up to any side in the league.

Yet it is impossible to ignore the progress. Recruitment feels more joined up. The squad looks better balanced. The arrivals of Tielemans and Santos have raised the floor of United’s midfield and given Carrick more variety in how he sets his team up.

Have they completely solved the puzzle? Not yet. But for the first time in a long time, it feels like they are finally putting the right pieces on the table.
